We are becoming more aware of how important it is to protect our heart health. With nearly 13 million Americans currently affected by heart disease, it is the number one killer of men and women in the United States, today. Statistics show that someone in the U.S. has a heart attack about every twenty seconds. Being proactive about your heart health can save your life.

There are a number of American lifestyle choices that can lead to an inevitable heart attack or heart disease. Just because it is slow to develop and easy to ignore does not mean that it isn’t happening to you. Lack of regular exercise, being overweight, eating a high fat diet, and smoking, all put you at a high risk for heart disease. We, as a nation, rely heavily on the “fix me” attitude instead of focusing on prevention.

You can help protect your heart from damage using vitamins and supplements that target heart health.
Coenzyme Q10 (COQ10 or Ubiquinone) is a compound made naturally in the human body, but the amount produced sharply reduces as we age, leaving our hearts at risk from as early as 21 years old. COQ10 protects cells from environmental contaminants and disease. The damage that occurs can lead to heart attack, heart disease and even cancer.

If you are undergoing cancer treatment, be sure to ask your doctor about taking any supplements, like COQ10, because they can interact with some cancer therapies. Your doctor may tell you to take it because it protects the heart from damage caused by many cancer medications. In an additional note, COQ10 can slightly lower blood sugar levels and is not recommended for diabetic patients, unless monitored by a physician, so talk to your doctor before you buy vitamins.

COQ10 helps heart cells resist infection by boosting the immune system and neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals can damage DNA and mitochondria (responsible for cellular energy), hindering the response time needed by cells to keep a heart healthy. It speeds up the rate in which chemical reactions take place in cells, thus keeping the heart’s defenses in top shape. The cells of the heart have the highest energy requirements of all human organs and thus, naturally contain more of this coenzyme than any other cells. As we age, our cells are depleted of this necessary nutrient.

COQ10 and vitamin C (ascorbic acid) are the two most important essential nutrients to human health. Both are actually needed to repair heart cells. Vitamin C and Ubiquinone provide the cellular reactions necessary to produce collagen and elastin, the structural proteins of the heart muscle. COQ10 and ascorbic acid studies have shown that they can control detrimental changes in the body that occur with age. They were also found to reverse age related degradation of the heart and immune system.

If you think that supplementing your diet with vitamin C and COQ10 could help protect your heart and body from heart disease, you could be right. However, you should always talk to your doctor about drug interactions and also about how each supplement could affect an existing health condition. Supplementation combined with a few lifestyle and diet adjustments could help you live a much longer, healthier life.

One must try to have a healthy body and a big part of this process is having a positive outlook on life. You must keep your mind active with some kind of mind thinking activity. This article comes to my mind as I just completed my annual cardiology exam. The Dr. is still amazed that I am still around working almost everyday, walking my dogs every morn and very seldom get sick other than a cold.

In 1988 I suffered a massive heart attack. My heart was so damaged that the muscle turned to a texture like oatmeal. (This is the way the Dr’s. described the situation to us.) They kept me alive with a mechanical heart pump hoping the muscle would repair itself as I also had an aneurysm which could only be repaired if my heart turned to muscle tissue, other wise they could not repair the damage or do a double bypass.

Apparently, no one was giving up on me and I lived to get back on my feet and after convalescing went back to work and all was well until 1998.
I did not feel well so went to emergency care. While there I had another heart attack, grand Moll seizure, mini-stroke and extremely painful headaches. After about a week they got me out of the hospital, but I was still having the headaches, until one night I had to go back to emergency care. The Dr. I had upon discharge used the old adage, take a couple of aspirin and call me in the morning.

We can thank our lucky stars as the Dr’s. and nurses suggested we get a second opinion and the new neurosurgeon stepped in and they found that I had a brain hemorrhage. It was nip and tuck because medication that I would be on contraindicated each other and I would be in real trouble. We had a pow wow and it was decided to take our chances with both meds.

I went home. Two years later the old by passes plugged up so had angioplasty and 4 stents inserted. Couple years later I had a bout with blood clots in my legs so they put filters in so the clots could not go to my upper body. Two years ago after my tests it was decided that I would be a candidate for EECP therapy as my heart was only functioning at about 29%.

EECP is a non-invasive , outpatient therapy to relieve or eliminate angina. This therapy is a system that pumps when the heart is resting, and stops pumping when the heart is working. This counter-pulsation increases blood flow to the heart muscle and decreases the hearts workload, plus creates greater oxygen supply and less oxygen demand. My heart is now functioning at about 55% and I work almost every day managing our hair salon and work on my on line businesses. If you have heart problems discuss the therapy with your cardiologist. My cardiologist calls me his miracle patient and always tells me that it is my positive attitude and being active, (mind and body.)

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women worldwide, responsible for over 25 percent of all deaths. Ironically, this disease which was responsible for claiming the lives of approximately 17 million people last year is perhaps one of the most easily preventable diseases. Follow these 10 simple tips to keep your heart healthy.

Eat breakfast – Start the day off right by giving your body the energy it needs. Enjoying a nutritious breakfast will jump start your body’s metabolism and help you to maintain a healthy weight.

Stop smoking – Live longer, feel healthier, improve your skin, and at the same time reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease just by giving up smoking. Most adult smokers want to stop their habit. Get with your doctor to establish a plan on how to quit smoking.
Set goals and get encouragement from family and friends. It’s a difficult habit to break. It might take several tries but you can do it!

Eat fresh produce – Replace some of the high-fat foods in your diet with fresh vegetables and fruit. Always keep some produce on hand for salads, snacks, and healthy deserts. If produce prices are expensive, consider keeping a small garden with a couple varieties of vegetables.

Control portion size – If you’re struggling with being overweight, try eating from a smaller sized plate. If you’re absolutely dying for potato chips, calculate a serving size and pour the potato chips into a small bowl. Don’t sit on the couch munching them directly from the bag as you watch television.

Stress less, laugh more – Studies have shown that laughter relaxes blood vessels in the body, which in turn is good for the heart. Manage your stress levels because feelings of worry and anxiety will raise your blood pressure. Make lifestyle changes to delegate responsibilities and eliminate highly stressful situations.

Exercise – Getting exercise is extremely important for the health of your heart. Discuss exercise options with your doctor. Be sure to schedule consistent, regular exercise 5 times a week.

Watch alcohol intake – Heavy alcohol use can lead to high blood pressure and heart failure. Drinking too much alcohol can cause weight gain which also contributes to heart disease.

Find time to relax – Schedule routine downtime to allow your body to relax after a hectic day. Listen to music, participate in relaxing hobbies, and spend time with friends and loved ones.

Drink less carbonated soda, more healthy tea – Even diet soft drinks contribute to obesity. Studies also suggest that sweet tasting soft drinks prime the taste buds for more sugary delicacies.

Get yearly checkups – Don’t skip your annual checkup. A yearly exam enables your doctor to monitor any health changes, and also provides you with the opportunity ask any health questions you may have. It also enables you to be made aware of any risk factors that could contribute to heart disease, such as elevated cholesterol or blood pressure levels.

Each person has only one heart but if you read the following number, you will be aware of the vital role of a healthy. A heart beats on average between 60 and 100 times a minute. That’s around 11, 5200 times a day, 806,400 times a week, and 41,932,800 times a year. That is too much for a small heart.

So how do you keep your heart in top shape? Like any other muscle, its strength depends on a combination of good diet and good exercise. To stay healthy, you need to walk the straight and narrow line of eating right and exercising frequently.

Diet

Foods high in fats and cholesterol are bad for the heart and arteries. They can cause plaque in the heart and clog the arteries, making it harder to pump blood through the body. Therefore, a heart-healthy diet is one that eschews unnecessary fats and cholesterol. Grains and vegetables should be the basis of your diet, and white meat and fish should outweigh the amount of red meat you ingest. In general, you should have about 10% of your daily calorie intake come from saturated fat, and keep the daily fat intake to fewer than 30% total. Avoid more than 300 milligrams of cholesterol a day, and less than 2400 milligrams of sodium.

Exercise

Regular exercise is an equally big factor in maintaining a healthy heart. Because the heart is a muscle as well as an organ, it needs to be exercised to continue functioning. Exercise that helps the heart’s endurance is called cardio or aerobic exercise. The more you exercise your heart, the more efficient it becomes, and the fewer times it needs to beat a minute in order to pump blood throughout the body. A low resting heart rate is indicative of good heart health.

To build your heart’s endurance, you need to elevate its rate over a lengthy period of time. Popular ways to do this are running, jogging, swimming, and bicycling. Try to exercise in such a way two or three times a week, and you’ll see real progress within a few weeks. If you’re consistent, your heart will become stronger and more efficient.

Weight plays a significant factor in heart heath. Carrying around excessive weight is not only taxing on the body, but it is also extremely damaging to the heart. If you are overweight or obese losing weight and adopting an active lifestyle can have a positive effect on your heart. The goal for losing weight is to be healthy.

Losing weight can be very difficult especially for people who have carried a large amount of weight for a long time. Finding the strength and the diligence to follow an exercise plan is important to losing weight and maintaining weight loss. One of the best suggestions is to first consult with a medical professional prior to beginning a weight loss regimen. By consulting with a physician you will receive a thorough checkup and recommendations on how much weight you should lose to increase your heart’s health and how you should begin the weight loss regimen.
Professional medical advice is very important to forming a solid base on which to lose and improve heart health.

Beginning and maintaining an exercise regimen is sure to increase heart health. Exercise in all forms, and particularly cardiovascular exercise, works the heart muscle and helps to reduce weight and excess fat in the body. Learning to incorporate exercise in one’s daily schedule is easy if you are willing to try. For those have lived a sedentary lifestyle taking small steps to increase exercise levels is important to maintaining an exercise regimen. For the sedentary trying such activities as walking for thirty minutes in the morning, evening or even after lunch each day can put you on a path to incorporating exercise in your life. In addition, participating in a variety of heart pumping activities such as hiking, jogging and dancing are also ways to incorporate physical activity into your life without it having to feel like a burden or chore.
Making exercise fun will increase the chances that you will keep exercising thus increasing the benefits to the heart.

Finally, exercise with the goal of being healthy and not with the goal of being perfect. Although losing weight for some is necessary, especially when the weight is affecting the body and heart, the goal should be to increase healthiness. What is considered healthy varies depending upon the person. Weight lost is not one size fits all. The goal is have a maintainable weight that will allow you to be heart healthy and at less risk for disease and pre-mature death.

In all, adopting and maintaining an exercise regimen is essential for having a strong healthy heart.

PART I

Top 10 Strategies for a Healthy Heart Lifestyle. We can’t change everything but stress, blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity & eating healthy can be.

February is American Heart Month—a reminder to all that heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the United States.

1. Make more healthy food choices.

One of the best ways to fight off heart disease is to eat a healthy diet, particularly one rich in whole grains, legumes, fish, nonfat or low-fat dairy products, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meats and poultry without the skin, and be sure to prepare them without added saturated and trans fats. Limit your consumption of foods containing partially hydrogenated vegetable oils to also lower the trans fats in your diet. Watch your “added sugar and salt” intake and remember that if you drink alcohol, do so in moderation. That means no more than one drink a day if you’re a woman, and two drinks a day if you’re a man.

2. Lose the belly fat and keep it off.

Having a wide girth, a beer belly, or an apple-shaped figure may mean you have large amounts of deep-hidden belly fat around your internal organs. This fat, also known as visceral fat, may in fact be the most dangerous fat you can have. The more belly fat you have, the higher your risk for developing heart disease or for having a stroke. It seems to be the type of fat that goes straight to the liver to be metabolized into cholesterol. LDL cholesterol circulates in the blood and contributes to the development of arterial plaque and narrowing of the arteries. Visceral fat also produces more inflammation in the body than fat found in other areas of the body. Inflammation is thought to play a key role in heart disease and other chronic diseases. Lose the belly fat and keep it off by following a sensible weight-management program designed to preserve muscle mass while promoting fat loss, especially around the waist. Losing just 5%–10% of your body weight can significantly improve your blood cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood-sugar levels.

3. Get more of the “sunshine” vitamin.

Vitamin D, also known as the “sunshine vitamin,” is made in the body when the rays of the sun are absorbed by the skin. Health care professionals and nutrition research scientists have known for years this vitamin is needed for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus to help build and maintain strong bones. But recent research indicates that adequate intake of vitamin D may reduce the risk of heart disease. Studies indicate that vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased cardiovascular risk, above and beyond established cardiovascular risk factors such as blood cholesterol and blood pressure. The current daily recommended dietary intake of vitamin D is 200 IU for everyone up to age 50, then 400 IU up to age 70, and 600 IU for those 70 and older. However, according to nutrition researchers, that may not be enough. Although how much is enough is still being debated, we may need three to four times more than what most people currently get. While 10–15 minutes a day of sun exposure can boost vitamin D levels in the body, very few foods in nature contain vitamin D. Fish (such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel) and cod liver oil are among the best sources. Small amounts of vitamin D also are found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks, but these foods also are high in fat and cholesterol. To play it safe take a multi-vitamin
/multi-mineral supplement with at least 400 IU–1,000 IU of vitamin D per serving.

4. Go fishing with omega-3 fatty acids.

To reduce the risk of heart disease, the American Heart Association recommends eating two servings of fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids each week. Why? Because clinical evidence suggests that the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA found in fish oil help to reduce risk factors for heart disease, including high levels of triglycerides and high blood pressure. There is also strong evidence to suggest these substances inhibit the development of plaque and blood clots, which both contribute to an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Higher intakes of EPA and DHA may also be helpful in people with existing heart disease. Clinical studies of heart attack survivors have found that daily omega-3 fatty acid supplements dramatically reduce the risk of death, subsequent heart attacks, and stroke. So, are you consuming your two servings of fish, rich in omega-3s each week? Well, if you’re like most Americans, you’re lucky if you consume two servings a month. Also, concerns about heavy metal contamination and environmental pollutants in our fish supply pose additional concerns about getting sufficient EPA and DHA supply from diet alone. Take a highly-quality, ultra-pure fish oil supplement daily to ensure you’re getting enough. Look for a supplement that provides a daily serving of 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids high in EPA and DHA.

5. Protect your body against free radicals and oxidative stress.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic, progressive disease in which plaques (consisting of deposits of cholesterol and other lipids and large inflammatory cells called macrophages) build up in the walls of arteries. Over time, these plaques can lead to a complete obstruction to blood flow or suddenly rupture, causing a blood clot to form and leading to a total blockage of the artery. Some researchers believe that oxidative stress and free-radical damage to the walls of blood vessels is the initial insult that causes this disease. Many nutrients such as vitamins C and E, and the mineral selenium, are potent antioxidants that work to prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and scavenge free radicals, so getting adequate amounts of these nutrients is another important strategy for promoting cardiovascular health. Consuming more foods rich in these nutrients, such as citrus fruits, strawberries, and potatoes for vitamin C, and nuts and seeds for vitamin E and selenium is a good place to start. And to be sure you’re getting enough on a daily basis, don’t forget to take a comprehensive multivitamin/multimineral supplement that includes these important antioxidant nutrients.

The information we have today about keeping our hearts healthy is incredible. This is especially important because heart disease is the primary cause of death in men and women in the United States. Every year more men and women die from heart disease that the next five causes of death combined! Years ago people knew far less than we know now about how to have a healthy heart through your life. As a result they did things that taxed their hearts and shortened their lives. Today we know that genetics plays a part, but even people who are genetically predisposed to heart disease can follow some simple guidelines that increase their likelihood that a heart attack will never be in their cards.

Here are 4 simple steps toward maintaining a healthy heart:

1. It’s been know for a long time that smoking is more than a major contributor to lung cancer.
It also is bad for the heart. Many studies link smoking to high blood pressure. This is because chemicals in the smoke irritate the circulator system, causing inflation in the arteries and increase your blood pressure. I’m sure you can guess how bad that is for your heart. So, if you want to maintain a healthy heart, knock off the cigarettes.

2. Some of the latest research in medical science indicates that there is a link between gum disease and tooth decay and atherosclerosis, a leading cause of heart disease. That means healthy habits for your mouth are good for your heart. The same bacteria that cause gingivitis in your mouth wreak havoc on your heart too. So, listen to your dentist and brush at least twice a day. Floss daily per your dentist’s instructions. Also, invest in your health.
Don’t postpone visits to your dentist. Get cavities taken care of right away, and preserve your teeth as long as possible. Missing teeth are another indicator that your heart may be in trouble.

3. Diet is another factor that affects the health of your heart. Some foods that are particularly good for the heart include those that are high in omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts, cold-water fish, and olive oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Also good for your heart are whole grains (forget the white bread and baked potatoes), fresh vegetables, especially tomatoes and eggplant. For dessert, serve up a little bowl of blueberries, and your heart will thank you. By using cholesterol reducing foods you go a long way toward maintaining a healthy heart.

4. The final key to having a healthy heart, or a healthy life for that matter, is exercise. Burn off that excess fat, especially around the abdomen. It’s especially hard on your heart to carry fat around your belly. It secretes harmful proteins into your bloodstream, headed right for your heart. Pick something you like and stick with it. Running, biking, swimming, even walking are all very good. If you walk five miles a day, you’ll burn 500 extra calories. And you don’t have to do it all in one long walk. You can split it up into two or three shorter walks and still enjoy the benefits.

So there you have it 4 solid steps toward maintaining a healthy heart. If you smoke quit. Brush and floss your teeth. Eat healthy and exercise. Not earth shattering but life saving. Start today – you are worth it!

You’ve certainly read a few things about how to keep a healthy heart, but here are some tips that you may not have known about.

Eat right and keep your weight down. This isn’t just about keeping your weight down, it’s about blood sugar. Whenever high sugar food is ingested that makes more insulin, then it can harden and inflame the arteries. For a healthier diet, eat a diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol. Eat lots of vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Go easy on processed food and desserts to stop soaring insulin levels.

Stop smoking. You will cut your risk of smoking related heart disease in half in the first year. So put away the lighter and start saving the cash for a celebratory trip. Even if you don’t smoke and your spouse does, you are at a higher risk of developing heart disease. Bribe your partner to stop.

Get moving.
To cut your risk of heart attack and of stroke by 35 to 50% you just need to move for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. Anything that makes your breathing a little heavier will work, raking the leaves, brisk walking or even shoveling the snow.

Pregnancy offers a clue. Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or those with gestational diabetes or preeclampsia whilst pregnant all have a higher tendency to gain placque buildup in their arteries. Ask your mother for family health history.

Check your waist. Abdominal fat has been recognised for it’s unpleasant and unhealthy tendency to release excess fatty acids. These acids can contribute to insulin problems and plaque build up. Your waist should be below 35 inches ideally.

Chill out.Being constanty stressed puts the body under strain.
The blood sugar and insulin levels are high and this can lead to development of abdominal fat. Being stressed can put you on an upward spiral of weight gain. Both pilates and yoga are exercises that an combat stress. If you don’t fancy that, then take yourself out on a walk or even watch something on TV to take your mind off your troubles.

Depression. You might not know that women who are depressed are at greater risk of heart disease. Ask your doctor whether you should be watched extra closely for it, if you are depressed.

Warning signs. If you feel pressure or tightness in the chest area, as though you are being squeezed, then get to the doctor. A pain in your neck, jaw, arm, back or shoulder that comes on when you exercise could also be a warning sign. Other indicators include nausea, sweating and shortness of breath.

Chocolate. Combine chocolate with blueberries as a sweet treat to combat oxidants and protect your heart.

Visiting the dentist. Women who visit the dentist regularly cut their risk of heart attack and stroke. Book yourself an appointment.

So there you have 10 Not So Common Tips For A Healthy Heart

CoQ10 for a Stronger Heart! Your Body’s Wonder Vitamin

You may never have heard of Coenzyme Q10…but the answer lies closely in your heart. This is one enzyme that thrives abundantly in your very own heart and is responsible for your body’s energy production. You may simply call it the heart energizer.

How essential is Coenzymne Q10? Not only a powerful antioxidant, but also a vital nutrient your body needs, Coenzyme 10 feeds your cells, assisting your body to work at its prime level. Your heart needs energy to pump blood throughout various organs of the body and Coenzyme Q10 provides that energy. In many cases when people are experiencing heart failure, there are significantly low levels of these healthy enzymes in their bodies.

Fact: The Older You Get, the More Coenzyme Q10 You Need

The woes of aging have increased the need for this enzyme, especially in the elderly populace.
This enzyme is also found in your liver and kidneys, and sadly, as we age, this helpful enzyme declines and our immune system deteriorates. And if the effects of ageing isn’t enough, some prescription drugs also lowers our bodies’ enzyme levels.

There are still gray areas in the study of this wonder enzyme and research is still ongoing. Clinical studies are still being done on its effectiveness in treating cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and even HIV or Aids. Controversies surrounding the use of Coenzyme Q10 for therapy stem from the fact that it is a natural product and therefore can not be patented.

The Great News: This revolutionary therapy had worked its wonders all over the world and is proven to be good for your heart’s health. Doctors and patients swear by it and many folks have lived longer, more active lives as a result of taking it.

Is it safe? No one has ever died from it, even at high doses. Coenzyme Q10 is fat soluble and it is best taken with some fat for absorption. You may add it to your favorite peanut butter or olive oil. Remember, coenzyme 10 supplementation is an alternative choice, and if you have a serious heart disease, it is always best to consult your doctor first.

Most of us take our heart for granted, so long as it doesn’t give us any problem. This is a wrong view as prevention is always way better than cure and can save oodles of cash. The steps are simple and don’t cost much. A little exercise, healthy food (In French maladie cardio) and tempering tobacco and alcohol cravings will go a long way in making sure we don’t end up suffering from heart problems.

Maladie cardio – healthy heart

Another reason to care for your health is the fact that more and more people seem to be dying due to heart disease. In the United States, it is the leading cause of death. And if you thought only developed countries have a higher statistic, you’re wrong, as developing nations too have seen a rise in people suffering from heart problems.
Fast lifestyle, sedentary work and addiction to bad habits are some of the main causes.

We’ve compiled a list of certain types of food guaranteed to benefit your heart. They’re tried and tested so you can have them without any doubts. The king of the list has to be fatty fish like salmon which prevent inflammation and blood clots. Aside from helping prevent heart problems (In French attaque cardiaque) fatty fish also help guard against cancer and depression. Olive oil, meanwhile, lowers LDL cholesterol levels which tend to cause heart problems.
Antioxydants- Can help in Treatment of Heart Problems

Remember how you hated green leafy vegetables as a child? Well, your mom told you right because they contain folate and vitamin E.
Folate helps keep homocysteine levels down which benefit your heart. While there is debate on whether vitamin E can prevent heart disease, it will still benefit you in other ways as it is an antioxidant supplement.

Tomatoes, soy and whole grain are some of the other foods that can help in your quest to maintain a healthy heart. And for those who love the occasional glass of wine, there’s good news. Red wine has polyphenols that could help your heart IF taken in moderation. 4 to 8 ounces is all you need so be sure not to exceed that limit.

A healthy heart will keep at bay a host of other problems. It doesn’t take much effort to care for and the other parts of your body will also benefit from a healthy diet.
